Your last replacement cartridge is spent, but the fountain still pumps when you remove it. Or perhaps you already fill the reservoir with filtered tap water and are wondering whether buying another pack achieves anything. The motor continuing to run makes the answer look obvious. It is not enough information on its own.
Can you use a cat water fountain without a filter? Sometimes, but only when the exact fountain design and its manufacturer instructions allow it. Some models can circulate water without a replaceable cartridge. Others are assembled around a filter or foam pre-filter that helps manage debris before it reaches another part of the water path or the pump. Movement proves that the motor is turning; it does not prove that filter-free operation is the intended configuration.
A conventional pet water fountain with its cartridge removed is also different from a product designed to be filterless. A purpose-built design may separate clean and used water instead of recirculating it through a cartridge. Before changing your setup, check the manual, the job of every filter and pre-filter, what reaches the pump intake, how the water is routed and what extra cleaning replaces the work the filter was doing.
Do All Cat Water Fountains Need Filters?
No. A replaceable filter is not mechanically essential to every fountain, but that does not make it safe to remove one from every model. The useful distinction is whether the product expects a cartridge, explicitly treats it as optional, or was designed around a different way of managing clean and used water.
The official guidance is genuinely model-specific. The PetSafe Avalon operating guide states that its filters are an added feature and are not required for normal operation. The same guide explains that its charcoal filter addresses taste and odor while the foam filter collects hair and debris before it reaches the pump. By contrast, eufy’s Petcare Water Fountain FAQ strongly recommends using the filters for that product, and its setup instructions include both purification and sterilization filters.
Those examples do not prove that one brand is “more filterless” than another. They show why the exact model manual wins. Even within one product, “the filter” may refer to a main cartridge, a separate foam sleeve or both. Removing one component does not tell you what should happen to the other.

What Does a Cat Water Fountain Filter Actually Do?
A fountain filter can combine several jobs: intercepting visible debris, reducing some taste- or odor-causing substances and helping keep material away from a pump intake. The work depends on the media and its position. A layer count or a white plastic frame does not tell you what every filter does.
Mechanical media such as mesh, cotton or foam can catch hair, food crumbs and particles. Activated carbon may adsorb some substances associated with taste and odor. Ion-exchange media can target selected dissolved ions, depending on its chemistry. A separate foam piece around a pump is often there for a different reason from the main cartridge higher in the water path.
The cat water fountain filter guide documents two current Fountelio platform-specific formats. Standard, stainless-steel and cordless platforms use a crescent cartridge; the current Wireless Pump platform uses a rectangular cartridge. Their documented construction includes perforated ABS supports, high-density filter cotton, coconut-shell activated carbon and cation-exchange resin. Those are Fountelio product facts, not a universal recipe for all cat drinking fountains. If you are choosing a replacement, use the separate filter compatibility checklist to verify the exact model, holder and water path.

In our product reviews, we separate the cartridge from the pump pre-filter in the parts list. Calling both items “the filter” can hide the practical question: if the cartridge is omitted, is the debris barrier around the pump still present, and does the manual expect it to remain?
What Happens If You Remove the Filter?
The fountain may continue moving water, but filtration, debris control, flow and cleaning work can all change. The result depends on where the cartridge sits and whether it also helps complete, support or restrict a designed water route.
If the removed component contains carbon or resin, those media no longer perform their intended jobs. If it is the barrier catching hair and crumbs, more material may circulate or reach the pump intake. If a separate foam pre-filter remains around the pump, it may still catch larger debris, but it does not automatically replace the main cartridge’s other functions.
Flow can also change in either direction. A dirty or incorrectly seated cartridge can restrict flow; removing it may make the stream look stronger. That observation identifies a possible restriction, not permission to operate indefinitely without the correct component. Conversely, some housings are designed so water passes through or around a fitted cartridge in a particular way. An empty holder may allow bypass or change how the assembly seats.

When we inspect fountain platforms during product evaluation, the important question is not only whether the motor still spins. We also check how much hair, dust or food debris can reach the pump after the intended filtration path has been changed. A motor can sound normal while the water path is partly blocked or incorrectly assembled. If the fountain has already stopped circulating water, use the cat water fountain pump troubleshooting guide rather than treating this article as a repair manual.
Is a Cat Water Fountain Without a Filter the Same as a Filterless Fountain?
No. Removing a cartridge modifies a product that was designed with a filter position. A purpose-built filterless fountain starts with another architecture. The two may both lack a disposable cartridge during use, but that does not make their water paths or maintenance duties equivalent.
A familiar recirculating fountain returns exposed water to the reservoir and sends it through the system again. Its cartridge may sit before or after the pump depending on the design. A separated-water product can instead deliver water from a clean tank to the drinking area and route used water into another tank. In that arrangement, avoiding recirculation is the design decision; the manufacturer has not simply left an empty cartridge slot.
PETKIT’s current EverSweet Ultra product page is one official example of this distinction. PETKIT describes a OneWay mechanism with a clean-water tank and a separate waste-water tank, while noting that its structural Cube C must remain installed. That is useful evidence of one model’s architecture, not a definition that every product marketed as filterless must follow.

Can You Use Filtered Water Instead of a Fountain Filter?
Not as a direct substitute. A household drinking-water filter acts before water enters the fountain. An in-fountain cartridge or pre-filter can also deal with material introduced after filling, including hair, dust, food particles and debris from normal use.
Filtered tap water may change the source-water conditions, but it does not change the fountain’s geometry or remove the manufacturer’s assembly instructions. It also does not stop particles from entering the open drinking area. If the manual expects a cartridge or a foam filter, starting with filtered water does not establish that either component is optional.
The practical approach is to treat the two decisions separately: choose suitable source water for your household and location, then maintain the fountain in the configuration specified for that model. Avoid inferring medical or water-safety benefits from the word “filtered” alone.
Do You Still Need to Clean a Cat Drinking Fountain Without a Filter?
Yes. Removing a cartridge does not clean the reservoir, drinking surface, outlet, tubing, pump cavity or other wet parts. A purpose-built filterless fountain also needs its own tray, clean-water path and used-water area cleaned according to its instructions.
Without a cartridge, you may need to remove visible debris more often because nothing is collecting it in that location. If a filter had been addressing odor or particles, water changes and physical cleaning become more visible parts of the routine. There is no universal exchange rate such as “remove one filter, clean twice as often”; watch the real fountain and follow its manual.
The cat water fountain cleaning guide maps the whole wet path. It intentionally treats filter care and surface cleaning as different tasks. A filter is not self-cleaning equipment, and a filterless design is not maintenance-free equipment.
Filtered vs Filterless Pet Water Fountain: What Actually Changes?
The biggest change is how the product manages water and debris, not merely whether you buy cartridges. A filtered fountain adds a consumable and a fit requirement. A filterless product removes that cartridge only if its architecture provides another defined path for supplied and used water.
| Ownership question | Filtered recirculating fountain | Purpose-built filterless fountain |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement cartridge | Usually required or recommended; model-specific | No normal cartridge if genuinely filterless |
| Debris management | Cartridge and/or pre-filter | Architecture-specific; may use strainers or separated water |
| Pump protection | May be supported by a foam or mechanical pre-filter | Must be checked in the actual design |
| Water path | Often returns water to the reservoir | May separate clean and used water or use another non-cartridge path |
| Cleaning | Still required for wet surfaces and pump | Still required for tray, tanks and water-contact parts |
| Ongoing planning | Filter code, interval, stock and fit | Waste-water handling, cleaning path and any required non-filter component |
A lower consumables bill can come with a different maintenance task, such as emptying a waste tank. A familiar recirculating layout may be simpler to understand but depends on the correct cartridge being obtainable. Compare the full routine over a month, including cleaning, cartridge changes or waste-tank handling, rather than treating “filterless” as an automatic upgrade.
7 Things to Check Before Running a Fountain Without a Filter
Start with written model guidance, then inspect what the filter was doing inside the actual assembly. These seven checks turn a vague yes-or-no question into a defensible decision. When we review a fountain platform for an OEM project, these are the same types of questions we check before confirming the final filter, pump and water-path configuration.
- Read the exact manual. Look for wording that says the cartridge is optional, required or recommended. Confirm the model number and revision rather than relying on a retailer answer for a similar-looking fountain.
- Identify every filter component. The main carbon or composite cartridge may be separate from foam around the pump. If one is optional, do not assume the other is too. PetSafe’s Avalon guide, for example, describes both a charcoal filter and a foam filter.
- Inspect the filter housing. Determine whether an empty holder still seats correctly and whether the cartridge helps direct water. Do not cut a filter open, trim the frame or improvise a spacer to change the fit.
- Trace what reaches the pump intake. Hair, crumbs and sediment can enter after you fill the reservoir. Ask what barrier remains and whether accessible pump parts can be cleaned under the instructions.
- Check the intended flow after correct reassembly. Listen and watch for weak, irregular or unusually loud operation. A motor hum is not the same as correct water delivery.
- Define the replacement cleaning work. Decide how you will inspect and remove debris, refresh water and clean all reachable wet parts. Daily top-ups do not replace emptying and cleaning.
- Check manufacturer and warranty instructions. The fact that a unit physically runs without a cartridge does not establish that the manufacturer supports that configuration. If the documentation is unclear, ask the brand before continuing.
If you cannot answer the first four checks, reinstall the correct prepared filter rather than using pump movement as the deciding test. If replacement cartridges are unavailable, contact the manufacturer with the fountain model and filter reference instead of choosing by shape alone.
What Should Brands and Retailers Check About Fountain Filters?
For brands selecting cat water fountain platforms, the fountain and its after-sales filter supply need to be planned together. A model that works well but has an unclear cartridge reference creates avoidable support questions as soon as the first customer needs a replacement.
In OEM discussions, we often see filter planning treated as a small accessory detail, even though it can affect replacement packs, after-sales support and customer questions much earlier than buyers expect. Fountelio’s current standard, cordless and wireless-pump platforms use replaceable cartridges. Their filter formats and water paths vary by platform; the crescent and rectangular formats are not presented as interchangeable or filterless.
- Map the exact fountain model and revision to its cartridge and any separate foam component.
- State whether operation without the cartridge is permitted, recommended against or not evaluated.
- Explain what the filter does without implying that it disinfects the fountain.
- Plan replacement packs, preparation instructions and retail availability before launch.
- Keep the manual, packaging and customer-service answer aligned when a component changes.
The B2B guide to filter and spare-parts planning for private-label fountains covers model mapping, replacement packs and change control in detail. Consumers looking for timing should use the separate guide to filter replacement intervals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my cat water fountain without the filter installed?
Sometimes. Use it without the filter only if the exact model design and manufacturer instructions permit that setup. A pump continuing to run does not by itself confirm intended operation.
Do all cat water fountains need filters?
No. Some are filter-optional and some are purpose-built without a replaceable cartridge. Other fountains are designed around a cartridge or pre-filter and should be assembled as instructed.
Why do cat water fountains need filters?
Depending on the design, a filter can catch hair and debris, help protect the pump intake, and use media such as activated carbon for certain taste- and odor-related substances. Not every filter performs every job.
Will my cat water fountain still work without a filter?
It may still circulate water, but the model manual decides whether that is the intended configuration. PetSafe describes the Avalon filters as optional for normal operation, while eufy strongly recommends filters for its Petcare Water Fountain. Those answers should not be transferred to other models.
Can filtered water replace a cat fountain filter?
Filtered source water does not catch hair, food particles or dust introduced after filling. It also does not change the intended assembly. Treat source-water filtration and in-fountain debris control as separate questions.
Do I still need a filter if I change the fountain water every day?
Daily water changes can be part of maintenance, but they do not prove the cartridge or pump pre-filter is optional. Follow the model instructions and keep cleaning all wet surfaces.
Is a filterless cat water fountain easier to maintain?
It may remove cartridge purchasing and replacement, but it still needs cleaning and may add another task such as emptying a used-water tank. Compare the complete maintenance path.
What is the difference between a filtered and filterless pet water fountain?
A filtered fountain normally recirculates water through a cartridge. A genuinely filterless design manages water without that normal cartridge, possibly by separating clean and used water. Simply removing a cartridge does not redesign the fountain.
So, Should You Remove the Filter?
If the manufacturer explicitly allows filter-free operation, follow the remaining assembly and cleaning instructions and watch the actual flow. If the manual expects or recommends the filter, use the correct cartridge. When the documentation is unclear, ask the manufacturer rather than treating a running motor as proof.
The reliable rule is simple: identify the architecture first. A filter-optional model, a filtered fountain with a missing cartridge and a purpose-built filterless fountain are three different products to maintain.
